How iOS 27 Enables GymKit Treadmill Tracking Without an Apple Watch

According to 9to5Mac, iOS 27 extends GymKit to the iPhone + AirPods Pro 3 pairing.

How iOS 27 Enables GymKit Treadmill Tracking Without an Apple Watch

No Apple Watch required for treadmill tracking. Heart rate flows from the AirPods to the machine. Distance, pace, incline, and calories flow back to Fitness on the iPhone. For home cardio and HIIT users, that's the delta that matters.

How it works

Setup is minimal. Tap the iPhone to a GymKit-compatible treadmill. Select Indoor Walk or Indoor Run on the console. Start the session. AirPods Pro 3 supply the heart-rate signal. The treadmill fills in belt distance and incline — metrics the iPhone cannot generate on its own. Fitness logs the workout locally. Nothing stays on the equipment.

Sample data from the report: a 16-minute treadmill walk produced 0.66 miles, 65 active calories, 97 total calories, 32 feet of elevation gain, and a 115 BPM average heart rate. The Exercise ring didn't update mid-session without a watch, but synced correctly once the watch went back on.

The limits

Apple Watch still wins on treadmill accuracy. watchOS 27 handles incline and belt distance with tighter precision than the iPhone-only path. GymKit on iPhone isn't a replacement. It's a fallback.

Two failure modes worth flagging. No AirPods Pro 3 = no HR source = the iPhone disconnects the instant the workout starts. AirPods HR permission toggled off in Settings = same outcome. Both kill the session before the first interval.

If you wear an Apple Watch during a GymKit session, iOS 27 redirects you to the Workout app on the watch. You can override and continue on iPhone. The system clearly prefers the watch when one is present.

The verdict

Pass if you already own an Apple Watch. The watch path is more accurate. Use the iPhone setup only when the watch is dead, charging, or sitting on the kitchen counter.

Buy-in if you don't own a watch and do own AirPods Pro 3. You get real incline, real belt distance, real HR. Useful for treadmill finishers who hate chest straps and refuse to grip metal contacts mid-interval.

Skip if your AirPods are non-Pro 3. No HR sensor. No GymKit session. Nothing changes for your setup.

Home HIIT use case: the only metric worth tracking is sustained HR, not the calorie guess. This setup delivers the HR signal reliably. The rest is marketing noise — comparable to Cardi B's new single arriving locked out of a No. 1 spot, where the only number that matters won't cooperate with the hardware available.
