Analyzing Mýa’s Viral Treadmill Routine: Performance Training vs. Home Fitness

A 46-year-old R&B artist is doing intervals on a treadmill in heels. As reported by MadameNoire, Mýa laid out her full training stack in an interview with Women's Health, and the heel-treadmill component is the headline grabber.

Analyzing Mýa’s Viral Treadmill Routine: Performance Training vs. Home Fitness

Whether it actually delivers aerobic value is the only question worth asking.

What the routine actually contains

The regimen is structured, not improvised. It opens with dynamic stretching and jump-rope work to elevate heart rate, then moves into boxing on a heavy bag. She runs the bag work at a steady 1-2-3 pulse, which she compares to a 3/4 waltz meter. She described the rhythm-based approach as making the work feel less like punishment.

Next block: deep squats. Five-second isometric hold, five-second pulse, five rounds. That is roughly 45 to 60 seconds of accumulated time-under-tension per cycle. High knees follow. Then weighted accessories: reverse flys, dumbbell bicep curls. The heels-on treadmill work sits near the end, with tricep dips to close out.

The heels question

Running in heels shifts center of mass forward, increases ankle plantarflexion demand, and reduces base of support. None of that improves VO2 max. None of it shifts lactate threshold in a way a flat shoe cannot. What it does do: build ankle stabilizers under load and rehearse the heel-strike pattern needed for stage performance in stilettos.

For Mýa, a touring singer and dancer, that has direct transfer. For the home reader chasing fat loss or aerobic capacity, it has none.

The 25-year timeline

Mýa says she got serious about training around the year 2000. She was in her 20s, touring constantly, and requested the label pay for a trainer. Two and a half decades later, she is 46 and still running intervals, weighted accessories, and mobility drills.

That is not a miracle protocol. That is consistency. Twenty-five years of structured training with progressive overload, plant-based nutrition, and daily mobility will outperform any single trick.

Do or skip

Do: jump-rope warm-up, rhythm-based boxing intervals, tempo squats in the 5-5-5 pattern, reverse flys, bicep curls, high knees, tricep dips.

Skip: the heels. Wear flat-soled shoes for HIIT treadmill work. Save the stilettos for the stage, where they belong.
